\n Starting build-up play with the goalkeeper\n <\/h1>\n\n \n

\n Many coaches avoid practicing playing out from the back with the goalkeeper out of fear of making mistakes. But the problem isn't the goalkeeper\u2014it's the lack of a clear structure for teaching it.\n <\/p>\n\n \n

Building out from the back with the goalkeeper is one of the most poorly executed aspects of youth and amateur football. The coach tells the goalkeeper to play short, the goalkeeper tries, loses the ball on the first press \u2013 and then the team goes back to hoofing it upfield. The cycle repeats endlessly.<\/p>\n\n

The problem is almost never the goalkeeper. The problem is that nobody taught the structure that allows the exit to work.<\/p>\n\n

What is needed for the output to work<\/h2>\n\n

Before any exercise, the coach needs to understand that playing out from the back is not an isolated skill for the goalkeeper. It is a collective action that depends on three simultaneous elements:<\/p>\n\n

1. Defenders' positioning.<\/strong> The center-backs and full-backs need to spread out to create angles. If they stay close to the goalkeeper, the opponent's pressure closes everything down.<\/p>\n\n

Intermediate passing line.<\/strong> There needs to be at least one midfielder dropping back to offer an option between the lines. Without it, the goalkeeper is left with the ball and no outlet.<\/p>\n\n

3. Goalkeeper's quick decision.<\/strong> The goalkeeper needs to know their first option and their backup plan before receiving the ball. That's not talent \u2014 it's training.<\/p>\n\n

Where to start in practice<\/h2>\n\n

The first step is to create simple, pressure-free situations where the goalkeeper can repeat the correct movement before having to do it under real pressure.<\/p>\n\n

Start with the positioning: goalkeeper with the ball in hand, the four defenders position themselves. Freeze the image. Ask the goalkeeper: who is free? What is the best option? Do this repeatedly until it becomes automatic.<\/p>\n\n

Then add passive pressure\u2014an opponent walking towards the goalkeeper without the ability to intercept. The goalkeeper has to make the decision before the opponent arrives.<\/p>\n\n

Only then apply real pressure.<\/p>\n\n

The Most Common Mistake of Trainers<\/h2>\n\n

Skipping steps. Having the team play with a build-up before training the build-up. It's like asking a player to execute a rehearsed play without ever having rehearsed it.<\/p>\n\n

The second most common mistake is blaming the goalkeeper when a clearance goes wrong. In 90% of cases, the problem is structural\u2014there were no passing options, teammates didn\u2019t position themselves properly, or the team hadn\u2019t practiced enough for the goalkeeper to trust the process.<\/p>\n\n

A reference to observe<\/h2>\n\n

Watch any Manchester City or Liverpool game closely in the first few seconds after the goalkeeper receives the ball. See how the defenders are already moving before the goalkeeper even touches the ball. The goalkeeper doesn't think \u2013 he executes what has already been trained hundreds of times.<\/p>\n\n

That's not goalkeeper talent. That's practice organization.<\/p>\n\n

What to do starting tomorrow<\/h2>\n\n

Reserve 10 minutes of your next training session just for positioning. No pressure, no game \u2013 just position. Goalkeeper with the ball, defenders spreading out, midfielder dropping deep. Repeat until everyone knows where to be.<\/p>\n\n

The following week, add a walking opponent. The following week, real pressure.<\/p>\n\n

In three weeks, you'll have a functional ball-handling game. Not perfect\u2014functional. And being functional already puts your team ahead of 80% of the opponents you'll face.<\/p>\n\n \n
